    oh why not.
nyrchicky is to blame for this.

    1) total number of films i own on dvd/video: wow, i had forgotten about video. about 25 on divid and the same number on vee-aitch-ess

    10) the last film i bought: i thought it was ichi the killer (which you should all see. very fucked up stuff). but when i was counting, i realized it was actually die another day (i plan to eventually own all of the bond films on dvd once i have the cash. (i currently own all of, and am reading my way through, the books [and i must say, ian fleming is great])

    11) the last film i watched:
    a) in the theater? sin city - which was beautiful.
    b) on dvd? probably die another day

    100) five films that i watch a lot or that mean a lot to me: (or make me think a whole lot)
    i) a clockwork orange
    ii) akira
iii) chasing amy (really any of kevin smiths five "jersey trilogy" films)
    iv) kids
    v) american history x

    101) tag 5 people and have them put this in their journal: i am going to go with people who i know post regularly enough that they might do this, and who i do not spend a fuckton of time with in the real world, so that i might be surprised by their answers.

    eins - minetruly
    dos - singedemer
    tre - corinnes
    yon - kashiicouture
    cinq - nicotinelips

a follow up from last wednesday
since no one got any of these right, here are the songs from the post from last week.
in bold are the ones i am surprised no one got, in italics the ones i would have been surprised if anyone got or bothered guessing

    1. the beatles - maxwell's silver hammer (slightly more obscure, but wonderful black humor)
    2. bela fleck and the flecktones - ufo tofu
    3. the brilliant green - tsumetai hana
    4. danny quinn - the jolly tinker (a rather amusing traditional irish song) (danny quinn is a guy i have seen perform in cape cod a few times, he is an amazing entertainer.
    5. the decemberists - the legionnaire's lament
    6. fra-foa - light of sorrow
    7. G0!G0!7188 - tokage sango
    8. GOING UNDER GROUND - short vacation

    9. igor stravinsky - two acceptable answers - last movement from l'oiseau de feu (the firebird), as a whole i love le sacre du printemps (rite of spring)
    10. james taylor - fire and rain
    11. john coltrane - naima (slow piece he wrote for his wife of that name, which i arranged for percussion ensemble and flute)
    12. judy and mary - kyoto
    13. l'arc en ciel (i really only like one or two of their songs) - drivers high (which i got addicted to through GTO)

    14. nickel creek - the lighthouse's tale
    15. michael torke - December (or adjustable wrench, i like both)
    16. miles davis - four
    17. the pillows - hybrid rainbow (probably their most known song, as it got quite popular through FLCL, which cartoon network used to show incessantly)
    18. steve reich - music for 18 musicians (i played in the first performance of this by a group other than steve reich's ensemble)
    19. wayne shorter - footprints
    20. weather report - birdland
    21. wilco - i am trying to break your heart

    good luck
stolen from nyrchicky (who stole it from someone else. . .internet piracy sure is getting pretty prevalent these days)

    - post the names of 20 of your favorite bands / musicians- see who can guess which is your favorite song by each.
    - once someone guesses right, bold that row and include the song.
    - note: it may help to read the comments so you can see who has already guessed what and to see hints i may have given.

i highly doubt more than one or two of these will get answered correctly.
i would be quite impressed if anyone actually even managed to name a song or piece of music by each of them. (for the three jazz people, i am looking for a song they wrote, even if someone else played a better version of it - same thing with the composers [although one performs with his ensemble sometimes])
alphabetized for your convenience. or inconvenience if you are anti-alphabetizing.

    1. the beatles
    2. bela fleck and the flecktones
    3. the brilliant green
    4. danny quinn
    5. the decemberists
    6. fra-foa
    7. G0!G0!7188
    8. GOING UNDER GROUND
    9. igor stravinsky
    10. james taylor
    11. john coltrane
    12. judy and mary
    13. l'arc en ciel (i really only like one or two of their songs)
    14. nickel creek
    15. michael torke
    16. miles davis
    17. the pillows
    18. steve reich
    19. wayne shorter
    20. weather report
    21. wilco

in a week or so i will post answers to any that have not been guessed correctly by that point.

edit: i added a 21st group to the list because i realized today i had a song by them stuck in my head, conveniently they are 21 alphabetically too. and i made it public so the heathens at home could play along too.

ah yes, that holiday wish thing that seems to be floating around on some of your journals. . .

first, the obligatory rules/explanations part of one of these things:
    "STEP ONE
Make a post (public, friends locked, filtered...whatever you're comfortable with) to your LJ. The post should contain your list of 10 holiday wishes. The wishes can be anything at all, from simple and fandom-related ("I'd love a Snape/Hermione icon that's just for me") to medium ("I wish for _____ on DVD") to really big ("All I want for Christmas is a new car/computer/house/TV.") The important thing is, make sure these wishes are things you really, truly want.

If you wish for real life things (not fics or icons), make sure you include some sort of contact info in your post, whether it's your address or just your email address where Santa (or one of his elves) could get in touch with you.

Also, make sure you post some version of these guidelines in your LJ, or link to this post (it'll be public) so that the holiday joy will spread.

    STEP TWO
Surf around your friends list (or friendsfriends, or just random journals) to see who has posted their list. And now here's the important part:

If you see a wish you can grant, and it's in your heart to do so, make someone's wish come true. Sometimes someone's trash is another's treasure, and if you have a leather jacket you don't want or a gift certificate you won't use--or even know where you could get someone's dream purebred Basset Hound for free--do it.

You needn't spend money on these wishes unless you want to. The point isn't to put people out, it's to provide everyone a chance to be someone else's holiday elf--to spread the joy. Gifts can be made anonymously or not--it's your call.

There are no rules with this project, no guarantees, and no strings attached. Just...wish, and it might come true. Give, and you might receive. And you'll have the joy of knowing you made someone's holiday special."

    and second. . .
    my list
    1. for people to not give each other gifts for xmas, chanukah, kwanzaa, birthdays, etc. but for people to give each other gifts because they want to give. not out of obligation.
    2. books. i like booksCollapse )
    3. a copy of your favourite book. if you give me a copy of yours, i will give you a copy of mine. (i have given a few of you a copy of my favourite one already, and a lot of you know what it is (stranger in a strange land by robert a. heinlein))(oh, if you would like to do this, drop me a comment first, as i have a lot of books and i may actually already have a copy of your favourite. if that is the case then i will just give you a copy of mine, unless you already have it. and read the copy i already have of yours)
    4. motivation to compose more. i have just been out of the habit of writing for a while.
    5. to be more fluent in japanese.
    6. hugs
    7. to go to morimotos restaurant in philly. anyone want to come with me?
    8. a burned copy of your favourite cd or cds. or a custom mix cd of some of your favourite stuff. i like having new things to listen to, and am often too lazy to find them myself.
    9. less fat on my body
    10. random post cards from friends when they travel.

i will put my mailing address and email and phone etc in a friends only post to follow this in just a moment.
